GRIEF

A tribute to lives lost at Bondi Beach to terrorists attack in broad daylight.
December 14, 2025

We wake to grief. But also to clarity.

The candles are still burning.
The tide won't wash away their names.

Sixteen lives lost.
Dozens more wounded.
An attack during a peaceful Hanukkah gathering... on a beach known for light, laughter, and community.

This was not random.
It was deliberate.
An act of terror, driven by antisemitism.
An attack on the fabric of Australian life.

A rabbi. A child. A police officer.
A tourist. A sister.
People gathering in peace, now gone.

One gunman killed. One in custody.
Explosives found and defused.
The horror real. The pain still raw.

And yet, as always, the ghouls crawl out.

Already, opportunists are twisting this moment into a marketing campaign for their grift. Groups like MFA.
Anti-immigration peddlers.
Telegram rage-farmers.
"False flag" truthers who couldn’t spell integrity if you spotted them the vowels.

They are not mourning. They are harvesting.
Don’t let them.

This wasn’t an attack between groups.
It was an attack on all of us.

And that’s why it matters that urgently, community and political leaders stand together.

Muslim and Islamic organisations across Australia have condemned this act in full.
Faith leaders of all stripes are offering support and solidarity.
That’s what real community looks like.
That’s what the attackers didn’t expect.

So don’t feed the outrage machine.

Don’t amplify rumours, grainy videos, or cooker threads chasing clicks.
Don’t feed the algorithm that feeds off grief.

Stick to real reporting.
Support real journalism.
Follow outlets like the ABC, SBS, or major newspapers with verified updates.

Because light can overcome darkness.
But only if we hold it high... and keep it real.

LESSON: KATAUTA

Japanese Poetry

A katauta is a traditional Japanese "half-poem," a short, unrhymed three-line verse often with a 5-7-7 syllable structure (or sometimes 5-7-5) used to express longing or questions to a lover, considered incomplete until paired with another to form a dialogue known as a sedoka (5-7-7 / 5-7-7), popular in ancient Japan.

Key Characteristics

Structure: Three lines, typically 5-7-7 syllables.

Theme: Often romantic, addressing a lover, asking a question, or expressing deep emotion.

"Half-Poem": A single katauta feels incomplete because it's a question or statement waiting for a response, notes

Britannica and Shadow Poetry.
Sedoka: Two katautas (5-7-7 / 5-7-7) form a complete dialogue or shared feeling, like a mirror of emotion.

Example (5-7-7)
Why do winter stars (5)
Shine brighter than summer stars (7)
As if they are shards of glass? (7)

Origin
Popular during Japan's Asuka and Nara periods (6th-8th centuries) as a form of intimate communication, says Sakuraco.

AFRICA RISES (1)

AFRICA RISES (1)

Africa rises, a beacon bright
One people, one destiny, igniting the night
From savannas vast to cities bold
One power unites, young and old

With voices loud and hearts aflame
The continent rises, reclaims its name
From struggles past to triumphs new
Africa's story is one we all break through

One people, one dream, one way forward
United we rise, hand in hand, no backward
With strength and hope, we pave the path
Africa's power, a future that's breath
